Established in 1962, the Johns Hopkins University MLA program is recognized nationally for the quality of its teaching and the breadth of its course offerings. The 10-course program enables degree candidates to pursue intellectual growth while advancing their professional and academic goals. The program features small, interactive seminars in an asynchronous online format compatible with all work schedules and time zones. Students in the program must complete 1 core course, 8 interdisciplinary elective courses, and 1 capstone course, all of which are selected from a range of different options. The program may be completed in as few as 4 semesters, or students may choose to stretch their studies across 10 semesters of coursework.

This challenging and rewarding program attracts people from diverse backgrounds and at various stages of their personal and professional lives. MLA students interact with professors and one another in a stimulating learning environment. In consultation with their academic adviser, candidates for the Master of Liberal Arts degree explore a wide range of interdisciplinary topics, drawing from areas of study such as literature, philosophy, history, religious studies, political science, art history, critical theory, music, the natural sciences, and digital humanities.

The MLA program has 5 learning outcomes. Students who complete this program will be able to:

– Evaluate different methods of inquiry within the liberal arts, building upon a foundation in the history of ideas and enduring humanistic questions.

– Analyze complex problems from interdisciplinary perspectives, utilizing various fields of study, sources, and methodologies.

– Design and conduct research that critically analyzes the chosen subject matter in well-informed, nuanced, and original ways and that engages scholarship across several fields of study.

– Create work that expresses fluency in critical theory, considers ethical responses to contemporary global challenges, and incorporates the voices and experiences of marginalized persons.

– Formulate and present research and ideas utilizing advanced communication skills that are suitable for diverse academic, professional, and cultural contexts.
